The first weekend of August I was in Melbourne for the 2024 AFTS conference. I haven't attended for a few years so it was wonderful to catch up with friends, artists, writers, storytellers and all the news.
Michael Earp, editor of Everything Under The Moon was our keynote speaker, setting the mood for the talks, stories and performances to come.
Nike Sulway & Carina Bissett's new project is The Orange and Bee which I am delighted to start delving into.
The Orange & Bee publishes original and contemporary short stories, poems, and essays that explore, expand on, and subvert the rich traditions of international folklore, with a strong focus on fairy tales (though we also sometimes dabble in other forms of folklore, such as fables, myths, and legends). We also publish traditional tales accompanied by annotations, discussion questions, and writing prompts.
The AFTS' new President Alyssa Curtayne presented on 'Giving Cinderella Back her Soul' and will be travelling to France next year on a residency to research her 'literary crush' Charlotte-Rose Caumont de La Force. Alyssa's substack is World of Wonder
Em Chandler was a fab storyteller and the audience was entranced by their version of The Story of King Odd.
Sunday afternoon nootles! A fairy tale conference is wonderful for lots of imagery! This month's Patreon whimsical wallpaper came out of some of these sketches - view three Crows a calling here
