I chose another story from The Turnip Princess collection, called The Enchanted Quill.
This is at the very beginning of the tale where a crow pecks a horse, spooking it and awakening the rider. The startled rider demands an explanation to which the crow answers "You have been asleep for 3 years!" The man looks down at his very long beard and has to agree that he has been dozing for a very, very long time. "What can I do to repay you?" asks the man, thinking how much longer he could have slept if not for the crow waking him.
"Give me the hand of one of your daughters" replies the crow and hands over a portrait of himself.
For a summary of the whole tale, Chaz of Fairy Tale of the month covers the plot here.
This was yet another challenging moment to wrestle into an image. I had a lot of fun with his long beard but the horse... horses can be difficult!
I do like the twists and turn of this tale - definitley tempted to illustrate the whole thing.
